An Impressive James I Oak Hanging Cupboard

Having a boarded top, above a dentil moulding with bolection supports to the centre and outer corners. This decoration extends round each side, as does the panelled strapwork carved with stylised flowerheads around a central split “egg-shaped” turning.

The two doors hang on the original iron butterfly hinges, each having an upper panel of elegantly turned fruitwood spindles, and a lower panel of open symmetrical fretwork. The frame of the doors is embellished with extremely fine parquetry bands, set out in a joined lozenge pattern.

The front is decorated with further split egg turnings, and in addition split faceted-cut elongated lozenges. Most unusually panel, or board, is carved with extremely bold floral leaves joined to a vertical fleshy stem.

The doors open to reveal two horizontal shelves on which valuable glass would have been displayed.
